How To Engage Your Lats When Doing A Deadlift (Video)

Reading Time: 2 minutes

One of our WWLW Strength Club members asked “how can I engage my lats in the deadlift?”

I have seen a lot of women at my gym struggle with this as well.

The lats are the second biggest muscle group in the body (behind the glutes) and if you want a strong deadlift and to protect your lower back learning how to engage your lats is critical.

There are a few ways to do this and some different cues so I am going to say a few of them to see if you can visualize it. A very simple one is to try to squeeze your arm pits. or close off your arm pits.

Another one is to pretend someone is going to tickle your arm pits and you are trying to not let this happen :).

Watch this video where I explain how to engage your lats when doing a deadlift.

I also have a great band deadlift drill that can help as well.

Give it a try and let me know if it helps you.
